Chapter 18: Field Exercise
The Commandant gave us a narrow door.
She called Ingrid, Poppy and the Major into her office before breakfast, shut it, and spoke without looking up from her desk.
"Cadet Dunning's papers are held by the Council until the winter field exercise is scored."
"Scored how?" I said.
"Fourth Company against Second Company. Capture the flag, forty-eight hours, in the Ravenhurst woods."
"We lose, Poppy goes to the Annex," Sebastian said.
"You win, her papers are returned in front of the Council." The Commandant finally raised her eyes. "Article Four of the Accord. A ward in the field must be accompanied by her Sire. Confinement is lifted for the exercise."
Sebastian looked at her for a long time.
"Ma'am, that is a very careful reading of Article Four."
"I am a very careful woman. Dismissed."
By noon we were in the woods.
By dark the temperature was twenty degrees, and the snow squeaked underfoot.
