Chapter 23: Slow

"Lie back," I said.

He lay back against the pillows in his own narrow bed, naked, with his hands at his sides.

The lamp burned low on the desk.

The tower was quiet.

Below us the academy was still celebrating, and somewhere across the yard Poppy was probably standing on a table.

I knelt over him in the lamplight.

I had a whole night, and I meant to use it.

"Hands above your head," I said.

He put them there.

"Don't move them."

"Yes, Captain."

I laughed.

"Say it again."

"Yes, Captain Solheim."

"I like that."

"I know you do."

I bent and kissed him.

Slowly.

His mouth first, long and wet, until he made a low sound and his hips shifted against the sheet.

Then his jaw.

The scar through his eyebrow.

The place under his ear that made him shudder.

I took my time down his throat and across his collarbone, where the old bullet scar lay.

I kissed it.

I kissed every inch of his chest, the dip of his stomach, the sharp edge of his hip.

I felt his heart beating under my cheek, strong and steady.

I had never loved a sound so much.

"Ingrid," he said, rough.

"Hands."

His fingers had slid down to my hair.

He put them back.
