The night manager found me in the basement hall holding my head.
I told him I'd felt faint and ridden the wrong elevator.
Davis ran up, white as paper, and put his coat around my shoulders.
Auden had already gone up the back stairs.
I never saw him leave the building.
Davis took me home early, held my hand in the car and called me his brave girl.
I sat with my face against the window and let him.
On Wednesday evening, the day before my thirtieth birthday, Imogen's car pulled up outside Birdie's bar on River Street.
She had Teddy in the back, asleep in a booster seat, and two suitcases in the trunk.
Davis was across town at a dinner with his lawyer.
I'd told him I wanted a quiet night with Birdie.
Birdie opened the side door to her apartment upstairs and took one suitcase.
"Nobody knows you're here," I said.
