Chapter 13: The Kitchen Rising
The cook did not wait for me to stand.
She hauled me up by the elbow.
"Quick now," she said. "The jailers are eating, and I told them it was the king's own pudding."
"What did you put in it?" Corwin asked.
"A little poppy syrup. Not much. They're big lads."
In the corridor two jailers lay with their faces in their bowls, snoring, one spoon still held in a fist.
The cook stepped over them.
She took us up a narrow back stair that smelled of yeast and woodsmoke, and she pushed open a plank door.
The kitchen was full.
There were forty people in it, bakers and scullions and dairymaids and stable lads, and every one of them had stopped working.
Nobody said a word.
A boy at the nearest table put down a half-peeled turnip and wiped his hands on his apron.
Then the old woman who scrubbed the pots set down her brush, and the whole room stood a little straighter.
"Highness," she said. "Your father ate his supper at that end table on his bad nights."
"He told us the soup was the one honest thing in the castle."
