I looked at the empty space on her key ring.
"January," I said. "When?"
"The second week. A Tuesday."
That was the week Dalton told me Marissa would take over the house accounts.
The week before the first eight hundred dollars.
"Did you tell Dalton?"
"I called him an hour ago." Ingrid's voice was tight. "He's changing the locks this afternoon."
"And the money?"
"He's having the bank pull everything. Properly this time. Not through her."
She put her keys back in her coat pocket.
She didn't say sorry.
I didn't expect her to.
But she looked at Poppy for a long moment before she turned around and walked away.
That night, Dalton knocked on Shane's door.
Shane had gone back to work. His first shift in four days.
I opened the door with Poppy on my shoulder.
Dalton stood in the hallway in yesterday's shirt.
