Chapter 14: Keys on the Counter
I climbed three flights with snow melting in my hair.
The loft door stood open.
Caleb was in the kitchen with a cardboard box on the counter, putting my coffee mugs into it one at a time.
"Those are mine," I said.
"I bought half of them."
"You bought none of them."
He looked up and gave me the grin.
It was the same easy grin from the day he first kissed me on a dorm roof, and I felt nothing when I saw it.
"Ainsley, babe. Thank God. I thought you wouldn't come."
"Why are you in my home?"
"You told me to be out by the first." He spread his hands. "I'm being a gentleman. I'm packing."
"With a lockbox under your arm."
There was a gray metal lockbox on the counter beside the box, with its lid up.
It was full of bundled cash.
He saw me looking, and he shut the lid with a click.
"Savings," he said.
"From my mother."
His grin held for one second too long.
"We should talk about that," Caleb said. "I think we've both been used. Your mother set the whole thing up, and I was a kid, and she pushed money at me. I never wanted to hurt you."
"You took it for six years."
"I took it because I loved you and I couldn't afford to say no."
"You took it and you slept with my best friend."
"That was a mistake."
"For two years."
"A long mistake."
I almost laughed.
The door creaked behind me, and I glanced back.
The neighbor from 3B stood in the hallway in her robe, holding her phone up with the camera facing us.
She gave me a small, grim nod.
I turned back to Caleb.
"Savannah's keys," I said.
"What?"
"The keys you took out of her bag. The car at the curb is hers. She's sitting in a cab downstairs without a coat."
