Chapter 19: Britt Turns
Britt looked up from the phone.
Her face was blotchy and her ponytail had come loose.
"Britt," Craig said, softly. "Put the tray down and go to your room."
She did not move.
"I'm not going to my room," she said.
"Sweetheart."
"Don't." She said it so sharply that the aunt beside me flinched. "Don't call me that in front of your mother."
His mother made a small sound.
"I've been recording you since August," Britt said. She held up the phone in a hand that shook. "Because you told me one thing and told your wife another, and I wanted to know which one was true."
"Britt, that is enough."
"You said she'd be out of the picture in a few weeks. I said you said that in August." She laughed, and it cracked in the middle. "I have a lot of this."
"Jo." Craig turned to me, and his voice came down into the gentle register he used on clients and waiters. "She's overwrought. She's twenty-four. Let her go lie down."
"Play it, Britt," I said.
She thumbed the screen and set the phone on the sideboard, with the speaker toward the table.
Craig's voice filled the dining room.
It was lower and flatter than the one he used at dinner, tired, a man doing arithmetic.
"The doctor writes the evaluation Tuesday. Dorothea's logs support it. Monday after Thanksgiving she goes to Pinecrest, ninety days, and the house is signed over by the new year."
"What about Eli?" said Britt's voice, on the recording.
