On Halloween My Husband Bet I'd Never Leave Him So I Stopped Waiting novel · Chapter 17 of 24

Chapter 17: Paolo Stays

I left the hospital on the second morning against the doctor's advice.

My mother signed the release herself and said she would sue the building if I fell down.

Tommaso drove, and he did not let me carry my own bag.

The board had been called for ten.

It was the same long table as before, with the same chairman and the same leather folder, and eleven faces that no longer looked bored.

Camille was already seated.

She wore white.

She looked up as I walked in, on my own feet, and for a moment her face had nothing on it at all.

Then she smiled and said, "Thank God you're all right."

"You're very kind," I said.

"I heard about the lunch. I was sick with worry."

"I'm sure you were."

I sat down across from her and set the flash drive on the table.

"Chairman," I said, "I have thirty days under clause ten to show that Camille Dorsey induced the end of my marriage. I will use fewer than ten. I would like to begin with a witness."

"Objection," Camille said gently. "Hearsay, from a woman with a grudge."

"Your husband is not hearsay," I said.

The door opened, and Paolo came in.

He had shaved badly, and there was a cut under his jaw.

He walked the whole length of the room, past the lenders and past Russell's empty chair, and stood at the foot of the table with his hands clasped in front of him.

"Mr. Sarto," said the chairman. "You are here voluntarily?"

"Yes."

"Say what you came to say."

"I helped her," Paolo said.
