Chapter 6: The Guest Room

I packed two suitcases and my mother's china and drove to Joanne's.

She opened the door in a bathrobe with a spatula in her hand.

"Tell me you're staying," she said. "Tell me you're staying and that I can finally say what I think of him."

"I'm staying."

"He's a coward in a coach's jacket."

"Joanne."

"And I have wanted to say that since your wedding."

She took one suitcase and led me down the hall to her spare room.

The bed had clean sheets and a stack of folded towels at the foot.

"You cleaned."

"I cleaned Thursday night, when I sent you that link."

I sat on the bed.

My hands were shaking, and Joanne saw it.

"What?"

"There's something else."

"Is it worse than the china?"

"It's different."

I told her about the clinic, and the empty chair, and the paper I had taken out of my desk drawer that morning.

She read it twice and then put her hand over her mouth.

"Monica."

"I haven't told him."

"Good. Don't."

"I'm going to, when I'm ready."

"You are going to be ready when a judge says so." She sat next to me and hugged me hard, spatula and all. "A baby. Oh my God. You're going to be so good at it."

I cried for a minute, and she let me.

Then she handed me a tissue and said, "Do you want pancakes or eggs? You need protein."
