Nick's POV
She came in at ten past two on a Saturday with a bike I'd never seen and a front tire flat to the rim.
I was at the stand with a wheel in the truing jig, and I looked up because the bell over the door rang.
I didn't drop anything.
I want that on the record, since it took everything I had.
"Hi," Dee said.
"Hi."
It was the first thing either of us had said to the other in two months.
It was two words, and neither one was her name.
She had her hair up in the bun, a gray jacket over a work shirt.
A bike helmet held in front of her.
The bike was a green Schwinn, older than me.
She wheeled it in and parked it against the counter.
I put down the spoke wrench.
I wiped my hands on the rag, which did nothing, because the grease is permanent, and I came around the stand.
"It's the front," she said. "I think I hit a nail."
"Or a pothole," I said.
