Chapter 15: Not Yet
On Monday evening Desmond's office was the only lit room on the forty-first floor.
He stood at the glass with his hands behind him and the river going gold below, and he didn't turn when I came in.
"Ford said you wanted to see me," I said.
"I wanted you to see this."
He turned around with a small blue box in his palm.
It was old leather, rubbed pale at the corners.
He opened it, and inside was a thin gold band with a square sapphire the color of deep water.
"My great-grandmother wore this on her wedding day," he said. "Margaret gave it to me at seven this morning."
"She said, 'Do it properly or don't do it.'"
My mouth went dry.
"Desmond."
"I said I would marry you in the dark," he said. "I'm asking in the light."
He did not kneel, because he is not a man who kneels for the cameras.
He only held out the box and looked at my face.
He looked as if he were memorizing it in case it was taken away.
