Chapter 18: Three A.M. Again
At three in the morning Perry woke, and Blaine's side of the bedroll was empty.
He lay still for a moment and listened to the tent.
There was no snoring.
Dad was asleep on a bench by the cook shelter, in earplugs, a hundred feet away.
The flap was open an inch, and a strip of starlight lay on the canvas floor.
Perry smiled in the dark.
He sat up, pulled on his boots and went out without hesitating.
The path to the creek was white with moonlight and loud with crickets, just as it had been the first night.
This time he did not keep to the grass.
He walked straight down the middle of the trail, boots crunching, and stopped where the pines opened onto the water.
Blaine sat on the flat rock at the bend with his feet in the current and a phone in his hand.
He didn't turn around.
"Took you long enough," he said.
"I was asleep," Perry said.
