Chapter 12: The Back
Ji-seok turned Si-woo around by the shoulders.
Si-woo let him.
He was too tired to do anything else.
The torn shirt slid down his arms and pooled on the burnt floor.
Cool air touched his skin from nape to waist, and he felt Ji-seok go absolutely still.
Si-woo couldn't see his face.
He could hear him breathe.
It took a long time.
"Five months," Ji-seok said at last.
"Yes."
"Every night. Every flare."
"Yes."
"You let me."
Ji-seok's voice splintered.
"You smiled and said it was gate dust."
"Ji-seok."
"Every night I came to you and you opened up for me, and I never once asked."
"Ji-seok. Look at me."
He did not.
His fingertips traced the longest line, the one that ran from Si-woo's shoulder to his hip, and it lit under his touch.
Si-woo shivered.
"It's not eating me," he said. "It's here. It's a lot, but it's here, and I'm here too."
"It's going to kill you."
"At month six."
"At month six."
Ji-seok said it.
"Si-woo, I'm going to the Board. I'm going to tell them to take you off me."
"No."
"I'll never touch you again."
"You will." Si-woo twisted around in his hands. "You will, because I'll tell you to."
Ji-seok stared at him.
His face was grey.
Tears ran down it, and he did not seem to know.
"You don't understand," he said.
"I was supposed to be the one who hurt people."
"I know how to be that."
"I've been that for twelve years, I built a whole life around not touching anyone, and then you came along and I let myself believe..."
"That you could be touched."
"That I wouldn't hurt you."
"You've never hurt me," Si-woo said.
"The Bureau did."
"Eom did."
"He handed me to you knowing exactly what would happen. You didn't know, and you were as much his tool as I was."
