Chapter 13: Nineteen Days
I sat on the flat rock where he'd left the doughnuts and pushed my right hand into the lake.
The water hissed around the ring.
My palms were bleeding from the fire escape.
My wolf was still on her feet inside me, looking back at the roof.
Sit down, I told her.
She didn't.
Cade stopped at the edge of the grass, ten feet away.
He didn't come any closer.
"Did I hurt you?"
"No."
"Did I do something you didn't want?"
"No." I looked at the water. "You did everything I wanted. That's the problem."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Then tell me the problem."
"I can't."
"Can't, or won't?"
"Can't."
"Is there someone up north?"
I almost laughed. It came out wrong.
"Not like that. Nobody like that."
"Is it the board? Peyton's father? Because if he's threatened you, I can."
"Cade."
He stopped.
I made myself look at him.
His eyes were brown again, and so careful it hurt.
"Not until the full moon," I said. "After the full moon I'll tell you everything, and you can decide if you still want to kiss me. Until then, I can't. And I can't tell you why."
"The full moon."
"Yes."
"That's nineteen days."
"I can count."
"So can I." He rubbed his face with both hands. "The Queen comes at the full moon."
"I know."
He was quiet a long time.
He was a terrible liar, and terrible liars are often very good at hearing one.
He didn't ask it.
"Okay," he said.
"You asked me to wait. I'll wait." He stood up. "I'm not going to pretend I like it."
He held out his hand.
I looked at it.
"To get you off the rock," he said. "That's all."
