Chapter 12: The Roof

Peyton's father slid the envelope into his jacket and patted it.

Garrick laughed at something he said.

Then Garrick looked up and down the street, and I stepped behind the oak.

I went back to the basement and wrote it down.

Day 11. Garrick Barrowcliff gave Peyton's father a letter sealed with my spare seal.

Garrick wanted me to shift, or run, or die before the full moon.

I'd do none of those. I'd get every omega in this dorm across that river alive.

That night the dorm had movie night.

Movie night meant the tall boy's laptop balanced on a chair, twenty omegas on mattresses on the floor, and a film so old the actors had phones with antennas.

At eight there was a knock on the basement door.

The twins opened it.

Cade stood on the bottom stair with five pizza boxes stacked to his chin.

"I lost a bet," he said.

"With who?" said Lark.

"Myself."

"Coach Halloway," she said, "you smell like a man who's never been in a basement."

"I've been in a basement."

"Willingly?"

"No," he admitted.

She took the top box out of his hands.

"Pepperoni. You can stay."

He sat on the end of a mattress with his long legs folded up and ate pizza out of the box with twenty omegas.

The twins asked him if it was true he once fought a bear.

"It was a large dog," he said.

By ten Lark had nicknamed him Coach Pepperoni and he hadn't stopped her.

I sat beside him on the mattress and didn't touch him.

I could feel every inch of the space between us.

When the movie ended, I pulled the bedsheet off my bunk and spread it on the floor.

I'd drawn on it in black marker: the gym, the woods, the creek, the quarry, the river, and the old mill down at the bend.
