Chapter 11: The Forged Order

The hall waited for Cade to say no.

He couldn't.

I watched him understand it.

If he refused the bylaw in front of the whole college, Peyton's father would call him unfit by lunch.

If he ran, the board would watch every step he took.

"Fine," Cade said. "I'll run beside her."

"Wonderful," said Peyton's father. "We'll all be watching."

He walked out.

Peyton picked up her chair and sat down in it.

Cade looked at me.

I gave him a very small shake of my head.

Not here.

He picked up his own coffee and left.

I drank mine.

It was exactly how I take it. He'd been paying attention at the lake.

The next day the Klamath Alpha came to town.

I heard him before I saw him.

A truck with Oregon plates pulled up outside the admin building at noon, and a man got out slamming the door so hard the window cracked.

He was big and gray-bearded, in a work coat and boots caked with river mud.

I'd met him once, a year ago, on the bank of the Klamath, when he knelt to my wolf.

He'd never seen my face.

He'd never heard my name.

I was carrying Peyton's lunch tray across the quad.

He walked right past me.

"Where's your Alpha?" he shouted at the first warrior he saw. "Where's Halloway?"

Cade came down the admin steps.

"I'm Halloway."

The Klamath Alpha pulled a folded letter from his coat and held it up.

I knew the wax from forty feet away.

Midnight blue.

My color.

"Your Queen wrote to me," the Klamath Alpha said. "My pack. The Thirty-First. She wants our omegas. Eleven of them. Handed to her Beta at your full moon, as tribute."

Students were stopping all over the quad.
