Chapter 16: Take It Right
I stopped on the top step with my hand an inch from the door.
"She took Lost Creek from the inside," Garrick said. "Smiled at their Alpha for a month. Then she killed him in his own yard."
That was a lie.
I took Lost Creek in one fight, in the snow, in front of his whole pack. He tore my knee. I didn't kill him. He's still Alpha there, and he sends me elk jerky at Christmas.
"Why are you telling me?" Cade said.
"Because you seem like a decent man, and she likes decent men. They're easy." A chair creaked. "Help me break her. She can't fight back. She's leashed. Push her until she shifts in front of your pack, and the vow is gone."
"And then?"
"Then the forty-nine are mine, and Madrone Ridge stays free forever. I'll sign it in blood."
"And the Run?"
Garrick laughed, softly.
"That's your pack's business. I don't interfere in local customs."
There was a long silence.
I couldn't breathe.
Cade was a terrible liar. If he tried to play along, Garrick would smell it from across the desk.
"Get out of my office," Cade said.
"Think it over."
"I have. Get out, or go down the stairs the fast way."
I went down the stairs the slow way, on my toes, and stepped into the dark mat room.
Garrick came down a minute later.
He paused at the bottom and breathed in.
The ring sat cold on my thumb, dulling me down to nothing. A basement. A mop.
He buttoned his coat and went out into the rain.
The lights in the mat room came on.
Cade stood in the doorway with his hand on the switch.
"You heard," he said.
"I heard."
"Lost Creek?"
"One fight. He's alive. He sends me jerky."
