Chapter 21: Counter Seat
Magnus took a picture of the last page with his phone and sent it to his lawyer at one in the morning.
Gretchen came and collected Joanne and the flowered suitcase at one thirty.
"My couch is free," she said. "Quarles moved upstairs. Do you snore, Mrs. Fisk?"
"I don't know," Joanne said. "Nobody's ever told me."
"I'll tell you," Gretchen said. "I'm honest like that."
Magnus left by the back door at two.
He didn't try to kiss me.
He just stood in the alley and said, "Lock it behind me," and waited until he heard the bolt.
At seven the next morning Joanne was back at the Bluebird in one of Gretchen's T-shirts, peeling potatoes in the kitchen.
She said she couldn't sit still.
She said my mother used to let her peel potatoes when she was twelve and it was the only job she'd ever been good at.
I let her peel.
The lunch rush was the biggest yet.
The TV interview had been on every phone in the city by noon the day before.
