Chapter 17: The Vote
Livia's POV
"This is a closed session," the chair said. "I'm afraid you'll have to leave, Ms. Doyle."
"Ms. Doyle isn't my name," I said.
I walked to the head of the table and put a cream envelope in front of her.
"This is from the founder's lawyer. It's notarized."
She opened it and read, and her face changed.
Merrick put his cup down.
"Madam Chair, this is irregular. Ms. Doyle is a junior employee. Whatever she's brought, the board is entitled to a proper process."
"Read it out," I said to the chair.
She looked at me over her glasses.
"It states," she said slowly, "that Livia Hartigan, granddaughter of the late founder, appears before this board on the date of her choosing. That her shares vest on the fourteenth of this month. And that this board has been asking for her since June."
Nobody at the table spoke.
The man by the window had gone still.
The woman in the red glasses took them off.
"I'm Livia Hartigan," I said. "In eight days, I own forty percent of this company. I can't vote today. I know that. Mr. Elliston moved this meeting up so that I couldn't."
Merrick stood.
"This is theater."
"Sit down, Merrick," said the chair, quietly, and to my surprise he did.
I turned and looked down the table at Quentin.
He hadn't moved.
His face was blank and his eyes were on me, and under the table his hand was gripping his own knee.
"You're about to vote on whether the man who runs this company keeps his job," I said to the room. "Before you do, I'd like you to meet a guest."
