Chapter 21: The Ballroom
Seo-yeon looked at the gold card for a long moment.
Then she pulled out the chair and sat down.
Do-hyun sat down beside her.
The steward made a small anxious noise. "CEO Kang, sir, your place is at the family table..."
"I'm not CEO anymore," Do-hyun said. "And I'm with a family friend."
The steward went away.
On the chair in front of Seo-yeon, close enough that she could have touched her bun, the Teacher sat very straight with her hands folded.
She didn't turn around.
"Good morning, Seo-yeon," she said to the air in front of her.
"Good morning, Teacher."
Beside her, Yu-na turned her head a fraction. Her white coat was open now. Anyone who looked could see.
Plenty of people were looking.
The ballroom filled. Chairmen, ministers, half the National Assembly, a pop singer, three film directors and every luncheon wife in Seoul.
At table nine Seo-yeon saw a woman with a small orchid brooch. The woman saw her too, and lifted her glass very slightly.
At eleven-thirty the lights dimmed.
Madam Heo stood up at the family table and took a microphone from a steward.
