Chapter 23: Revolving Door
Seo-yeon looked at the pen in his hand.
Behind him, waiters were already stripping orchids off the tables. The former prime minister was being helped down the stage steps.
At the family table, her old ring lay beside an untouched glass of champagne, where Madam Heo had left it.
"Not here," she said.
His face didn't change, but something in his shoulders did.
"Not in their hotel," she said. "Not one line of it."
She took the paper and the pen out of his hands and put them in her bag.
Then she took his hand.
She walked him down the curving stair into the gold lobby, past the piano, past the people with their phones up, past the private lift.
The Teacher came behind them on Yu-na's arm.
At the brass revolving door Seo-yeon stopped.
The last time she had stood here, he had been waiting beside it.
This time she pushed the door.
She went through it with his hand in hers, and out into the cold bright October afternoon.
He came out after her, into the noise of the street.
He laughed out loud on the hotel steps.
