Chapter 19: Crane
Alistair Crane ate lunch at one o'clock every weekday at the same corner table of the same club on Michigan Avenue.
The dining room had dark paneling, white tablecloths, and a staff trained to move without footsteps.
The steward at the door took one look at me and began to lift a hand.
"Members and guests only, madam."
"She is my guest," Stefan said. "My father's name is on the wall behind you. Mine is under it."
The steward lowered his hand.
Crane sat at the corner with two other men in gray suits and a half-eaten sole in front of him.
A gray cardboard box sat on the empty chair at his side.
He saw us coming through the tables and set down his fork, very gently.
"Stefan," he said. "Miss Kaufman. This is hardly the place."
"It's exactly the place," I said.
I stopped at the edge of his table.
The two men looked up from their plates.
One was bald and sunburned, and the other had the face of someone who had spent forty years telling people to sit down.
