Chapter 19: Stakes
The headmaster's assistant brought the forms herself.
She set a folding table on the quad at three, in front of the chapel steps, and laid out four copies with four pens.
"Counsel drafted these," she said. "A written assignment of one's share to a single claimant. You'll want witnesses."
"I have about three hundred," I said.
She looked at the students already spilling out of the dining hall into the cold.
"So you do," she said, and went back inside, and I thought I saw her smile.
Roisin stood at my right with a clipboard she didn't need.
Jude stood at my left and said nothing.
Word had gone around the school.
By twelve-fifteen the quad was full.
The lacrosse boys had come out in a pack.
I stood on the chapel step with my hair blowing into my eyes and a list in my hand.
I read four names.
"Jude Rafferty."
He came forward first.
He didn't look at the crowd, or at me.
He took a pen and signed his name in black ink with his flat left-handed slant, and then he stepped back.
