Chapter 18: The Courthouse Steps
On the first Monday of March it snowed on the Allegheny County Courthouse.
A crowd stood on the steps in coats and boots, because the sheriff was selling the Maddox Motor Group by the lot.
Veronica held an umbrella over her own head, and Dex held another over a stack of binders.
"Fifteen minutes," Dex said, stamping his feet. "Zane, I'm going to throw up."
"You're a bookkeeper."
"I'm a bookkeeper in a suit, standing in front of a hundred people who all smell like wet wool."
Roxy stood on my other side in a green coat and a hat Dex's mother had knitted for her.
She had not asked to come.
She had not asked for anything in five months, and she had paid her own bus fare to the steps.
Three weeks earlier a court judge had read Dex's Delaware page for himself.
He had struck Preston's claim before lunch, and my account came out of the freeze untouched.
Now I held a different kind of paper.
It was the sale notice for six lots, printed in small black type.
