Chapter 11: Missing and Pregnant

I woke in the morning with his arm over my ribs and the baby kicking his wrist.

Gray light came through the cabin hatch.

For one stupid, soft minute, I lay still and let myself be happy.

Then I remembered the question I had asked in the dark.

Mason was already awake.

He lay on his back looking at the ceiling, and his bandaged hand rested open on my stomach.

"Good morning," he said.

"Good morning."

"About the tarp."

"Yes."

"It's a survey camera." His voice was flat. "I take pictures of wrecks for insurance. It's old. I forgot it was there."

I sat up and pulled the blanket to my chest.

"That's a lie."

"Hallie."

"You said no lies. Rule three."

"The rules ended last night."

"I know. I ended them." I looked at him. "You lied to my mother's face, you lie to me. You told me you did it all the time."

"I did say that."

"So when is it a lie and when is it the truth?"

He sat up, too.

His jaw worked.

"Can we do this after we eat?"

"Do you have a better answer in an hour?"

He opened his mouth and closed it.

I got out of the bunk, pulled his sweatshirt over my head and went up the ladder.

He found me at the stern with a thermos and two cups.

We sat on the rail and did not talk.

The cove was still, with the pines black along the shore.

I had the strangest feeling that if I said nothing, he would say it himself.

He handed me a cup.

Then the radio on the console crackled with the harbor news, and the announcer's voice came out flat and shocked.
