Chapter 10: Sea Stairs

The lock turned at midnight.

I was off the bed before the door was open, with the lamp's base in both fists.

"Easy, Mrs. Langford."

It was the deputy from the dock.

He had his hat in one hand and a brass key in the other, and his eyes were red from no sleep.

"The doctor's asleep in the chair at the end of the hall," he said. "Mr. Langford's father put me on the back stairs. I have about ten minutes before I'm missed."

"Why are you doing this?"

"I told you. I have a daughter."

He stepped aside.

"There's a servants' stair behind the linen closet, and it comes out by the sea steps. I can't touch the Langfords' launch. I can look the other way at a staircase."

"Mason," I said. "They took him out on the water."

His face tightened.

"Then you'd better hurry."

I went down the back stairs in the green dress with my shoes in my hand.

The sea steps were stone, slick with spray.

I came out onto the dock into a black wind with no moon, and my heart was pounding so hard I could taste it.

Mason's boat was still tied at the end of the pier.

A figure sat in the stern with his head bowed.

"Mason!"

He looked up.

He was soaked to the skin, his gray jacket was gone, and his shirt clung to his chest.

His wrists were bleeding where the cuffs had been.

I jumped down into the boat and nearly fell into him.

"They put me over the side by the Ledge," he said, through chattering teeth. "Two miles out, in the cuffs."

"You swam."

"I slipped the cuffs on the way down. Salvage men learn that."

"You swam two miles."

"I've done worse."

I got the blanket from the console and plugged it in with shaking hands.

Then I wrapped it around him and pressed my palms against his wet face.

His skin was freezing.

"Don't," he said. "You're pregnant."

"I know what I am."

"They'll send the launch back. Cast us off."

I cast off the lines.

He took the wheel in his torn hands and ran us out into the dark with no lights.
