Pushed Overboard Pregnant, I Crashed My Husband's Wedding novel · Chapter 9 of 24

Chapter 9: The Rest Cure

I did not get in the car.

I stepped out of Wesley's arm and said, very loudly, "My mother is standing right here, Wesley. Say it again."

He smiled for the phones.

"Nobody said anything, sweetheart."

"You said she was next."

"You're hearing things."

That was the plan, I realized.

He did not have to be believed.

He only had to be gentle, and I only had to look wild.

A man in a gray suit and two paramedics in white came across the grass at a fast, polite walk.

The man in gray carried a black bag.

"Mrs. Langford," he said. "I'm the family physician. We've been so worried."

"I don't know you."

"You've been through a terrible trauma, and the pregnancy needs watching."

"I'll see my own doctor."

"Under the circumstances, I've written a hold." He held up a paper, and I saw his signature on the line. "For you and the baby. It's only for a day or two."

Wesley's father stood behind him.

His face was calm, and his hands were folded.

"Guests," he said, in a warm, deep voice. "My son's wife has come home after a week of terror. Please give the family a moment."

And just like that, the lawn believed him.

I watched it happen in the faces.

A man took a half-step back, a woman looked away, and the phones that had been pointed at Wesley began to drift toward the grass.

"Hallie," my mother said sharply. "Don't you let them."

A man in a dark suit took her elbow.

"Ma'am, for your own safety."

"Take your hand off me!"

"Mom!"

The paramedics each took one of my arms, politely.

I kicked one in the shin, and he winced and did not let go.

I screamed into the microphone as they pulled me away from the stand.

"If I'm not out by Monday, ask where I am! Ask them where I am!"
