Chapter 8: Speak Now

Nobody moved for the length of one breath.

Then three hundred people turned in their chairs.

"Hello, Wesley," I said.

I was standing in the center aisle in a green silk dress with my belly showing, and the black veil in my fist.

Whitney made a small choking sound.

Wesley's face went white to the lips.

Then I watched him decide.

His eyes filled, his mouth opened, and he ran down the steps of the arch with both arms out.

"Hallie! Oh God, Hallie, you're alive!"

He sobbed it for the whole lawn.

A woman in the third row burst into tears.

Someone began to clap, and the clapping spread, because people will clap for anything that looks like a miracle.

I stepped back before he could touch me.

"Don't," I said.

"Baby, please. You're in shock."

"I'm not your baby."

He turned to the crowd with his hands open.

"She has been missing for a week," he said, shaking. "She went into the water Saturday, out of her mind with grief over the pregnancy, and I have been going crazy ever since."

My mouth fell open.

He had made it my fault.

"Please," he said, to the guests, "let me get my wife to a doctor. She isn't herself."

His father had already lifted a hand, and two men in dark suits moved toward the aisle.

I walked past Wesley to the stand where the officiant's microphone stood on its cord.

"Ma'am," the officiant said.

"Excuse me," I said, and took it.

My voice boomed over the lawn.

"My name is Hallie Winslow Langford. Six nights ago, my husband kissed me on the forehead on the back deck of his yacht. Then he put both hands on my chest and pushed me into the water."
