Chapter 23: Thanksgiving
For Thanksgiving I pushed my dining table against the kitchen counter and borrowed two folding tables from my father's store.
The tables ran the length of both rooms, under a white sheet, with every chair I owned and four from the hardware store's patio display.
Junie wrote the place cards in marker.
Each one had a name on the front and, on the back, a small word in capitals.
The back of my father's said SORRY, DONE.
The back of Cassidy's said SORRY, WORKING.
On Leon's she had written PASSED, and underlined it twice.
My uncle and aunt were there, the ones who had stood up at the brunch.
My uncle had called me on Monday and said, "I stood beside that necklace at every christening for years and never once asked about it."
I had said, "Come eat."
My neighbor brought her cat in a carrier, which nobody had asked her to do.
By three the house smelled of turkey, sage, and the particular steam of too many people in one kitchen.
Cassidy stood beside me at the stove, stirring gravy with a wooden spoon.
