Chapter 27: A Bowl Each
On Friday at dusk Gyu-ho scraped the last of the ash out of the stone trough with his hand.
It came to two double handfuls, gray and soft, and it was every fire he had lit since November.
He had planned it for Bom's ginseng row, and for the forty-one rows still waiting for whoever came next.
He carried it to the rice instead.
Namgung had said five, so he was planting for five, without any way of knowing whether Bom had found them.
Ginseng at Good still woke a skill halfway, and half was something.
Rice at Good took an hour, and an hour in front of every guild in Korea was long enough to be laughed out.
He had already had one bowl laughed at, and he wasn't going to watch an old woman go through that.
So he worked the ash into the wet mud, and pushed the saved grain in, and sat up with the stove.
By morning the strip stood gold to his hip, and the window over it said Prime.
He cut it, threshed it against the side of the trough, and cooked five bowls in the iron pot with stream water.
He filled Bom's old nail sack with tomatoes and set six radishes on top, because nobody knew what floor 28 would ask of a body.
That made two lots, out of the five a Market the stone allowed him.
The rest of the field could wait, and the coins could wait forever.
The five came up the last stairs into the Market at a quarter to ten, and the hall turned around to look at them.
They were mud to the knees.
The knitter had a gray sock half finished on her needles and a twig in her perm.
The rider still had his helmet on.
Gyu-ho sat forward in the stone seat so hard the crooked column creaked.
