Chapter 16: The Lamp
The Lord came out of the inner room in the dark with no lamp and no fur collar, and stood over the mat.
Shi Wen sat up on one elbow.
"You said the mat," he said.
"I said you sleep on it," said the Lord. "I did not say that I would not come to you."
"That's cheating."
"I am the Sect Lord. I make the rules and I amend them."
He knelt down on the thin mat with his hands on his knees, in his shirt, and did not know where to put them.
Shi Wen had seen him face down a hall of three hundred without moving a finger.
He had not seen him do this.
"The sword hums," said Duan. "I can feel it from here, in the guest court. It will not let me sleep."
"You're shaking."
"I am cold."
"Is that fear or appetite?" said Shi Wen. "On your face they look the same."
The Lord stared at him.
Then Duan Linxiao laughed, a short, startled, helpless sound, and it changed his whole face.
"You have been saving that," he said.
