Chapter 37: Somewhere to Put It

Anke's POV

I woke up in July with two brown handprints burned into the sheet under me.

Lorenz was asleep on his back beside me, with one arm flung over his eyes.

I'd been dreaming about my father's forge, and my hands had done the rest.

I pulled the sheet off the bed before he woke and turned it over in the linen chest, burned side down.

It wasn't the first one.

It was the fourth.

My forge was down in town by the river.

The painted sign over the door said KOHLER, SMITH, because I'd kept my own name.

I'd been bought once, and once was enough.

Three girls worked for me there, and every one of them could warm iron with her hands a little.

None of them could do what I did.

That night I sent them home early and locked the door.

I'd been holding the heat in for weeks.

It had started in the spring, a little more every day.

I stood in the middle of the dark forge and stopped holding it.

It went out of me.

The air shook.

The anvil glowed without my touching it, and the tongs on the wall sagged on their hooks.
