Chapter 54: No Guns

"No," I said.

It went down the hall and came back off the far wall.

"No guns," I said. "Not for the crown, not for the river lords, not for anybody."

"Velde makes boats, and pumps, and roads through mountains. It doesn't make anything whose only work is killing."

"The king has refused you a war every month for a year. I'm refusing you the guns for it."

Ottmar didn't look angry.

"You're refusing your crown before its lords," he said. "I want them to be sure they heard it."

"They heard it."

"My cousin had a gun on his own gate tower last winter. It fired on the Finders."

"It broke a ram and a siege tower, and nobody died. That's the only work it's ever done."

"And now Velde has no guns for its king." He spread his hands to the lords. "You heard him."

They had heard him.

Some of them looked at me with dislike, and some with something closer to respect.

Ottmar had lost the regency at supper and his guns a minute later, before every lord in Kronhal.
