Chapter 6: The Midwife

The whole row had gone quiet to listen.

I let it stay quiet for a second.

Then I turned to the crowd.

"Did everybody hear that?" I said. "The Alpha of Stalbridge wants me back. Not as his mate. He already threw that away in front of you all. He wants his new Luna in the big house, and me in his bed at night, and his mother says that's fine."

Cressida's mouth fell open.

"Linnet," Alaric said through his teeth.

"No, say it again. The woman selling wreaths didn't catch it."

"I caught it," said the woman selling wreaths.

Somebody laughed.

Then a lot of people laughed.

Alaric's face went dark red from the collar up.

"You don't understand what I'm trying to do," he said.

"I understand you perfectly. You want to keep everything and pay for nothing."

He reached for my arm.

I didn't even think about it.

I swung my hand at his sleeve, and the fire came off my palm white and fast and ran down his good wool coat from shoulder to cuff.

It didn't touch him.

It just burned a long black stripe down the coat, neat as a seam, and left the smell of scorched wool in the cold air.

Alaric stared at his arm.

"That's my answer," I said. "Tell your mother."

Cressida turned on her heel and pushed her way out through the crowd without him.

Two of her girls went after her.

The third stayed and bought a jar of somebody's honey, looking at me sideways the whole time.

Then I smelled pine pitch behind me, and I didn't have to turn around.

Rhys had come up through the crowd and stopped a step behind me.
