Chapter 7: The Ford

"What did she believe?" I said.

The old woman looked at the stove.

"Poison. She said his mouth tasted bitter at the end. Bitter like green walnuts. She said it to me once, the night after we buried him, and never again."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"Bitter," I said.

"Bitter."

I sat back on my heels.

Three months ago, in Rosamund's sitting room, with the iron collar on the wall and the good china out, I had drunk a cup of tea that tasted of green walnuts.

I'd thought it was some fancy blend.

I'd been sick for two days after.

I'd thought it was nerves.

"Linnet," Rhys said from the wall.

I looked up.

He was standing absolutely still.

"I tasted that," I said. "At her tea. The day she cleaned the stone."

Nobody said anything.

Greer put her hand over her mouth.

Rhys came off the wall and crouched down in front of me so our eyes were level.

"I'll tell you what was in that letter," he said. "Right now. Tonight."

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted it so badly my hands shook.

Then I thought about walking into that stone circle in front of both packs with Rosamund's words in my head, whatever they were, going around and around.

"No," I said. "Not till after the court."

"Linnet."

"She wants me scared and confused when I stand up there. That's why she wrote to you and not me. I'm not giving it to her." I took a breath. "After. You tell me the second it's over."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he nodded once.

They came for the midwife at dawn.

I was awake already, standing at my window, and I saw them come out of the Stalbridge pines on the far bank.

Five of them.

One of Alaric's betas and four enforcers, the same man with the burned hand among them.

I was downstairs and out the door before Rhys was out of his room.
