Chapter 8: The Moon Court

The Moon Court sat on the bald top of the hill between the two packs, in a ring of standing stones older than either of them.

By dusk there were more wolves on that hilltop than I'd ever seen in one place.

Stalbridge filled the south side, three hundred of them in their good coats.

Kinloch filled the north, fewer, louder, in flannel and boots.

Greer had made a sign out of a flour sack that said WHITE WOLF in black paint, and Rhys had made her put it away.

She'd put it under her coat with one corner sticking out.

The elder sat on a flat stone at the head of the circle with a shawl over her knees.

She was older than the midwife, and her eyes were milky, and when she turned them on you, you felt it.

I stood in the middle of the ring with the moonstone on my chest.

Rosamund stood across from me in dove-gray wool and pearls.

Cressida stood at her elbow with a fresh silk scarf around her throat.

Alaric stood behind both of them.

His sleeve had been mended.

You could still see the line.

"Who brings the charge?" said the elder.

"I do," said Rosamund. "This girl walked into my son's mating ceremony and tore a pack treasure off his chosen's neck in front of three hundred witnesses. Then she ran across the river with it."

"I walked," I said. "I didn't run."

A few people laughed on the Kinloch side.

The elder lifted one finger, and they stopped.

"The stone was a betrothal gift," Rosamund went on. "My son gave it to Cressida Pyle. Cressida, tell the court."

Cressida stepped forward.

"Alaric gave it to me the night before," she said. "He fastened it on me himself. He said it was meant for his Luna."
