Chapter 21: Taken Back
I stood in the middle of the cat ward and couldn't breathe.
Abel got the old omega out of the kennel run with a pair of bolt cutters.
"Two of them," he said, coughing. "Ski masks. One smelled like horses and diesel. The other was limping, with a bandage on his leg."
Abel went still.
"Where on his leg?"
"High. Back of the thigh."
"That's where I bit him," Abel said.
The guard from Wolverine Creek.
The enforcer came at six fifteen, in his Reyner jacket, with his son left asleep at his sister's.
He walked once around the lot with his head down.
Then he came back.
"Horses, diesel and a bitten man," he said. "There's one ranch in this valley with all three."
Nobody had to say whose.
The senior Elder's ranch sits on the bench above the river, three miles up the county road on the pack side.
Red barn.
Two hundred head of cattle and a pasture full of quarter horses he likes to show at the fair.
I'd eaten ham at his table after his wife's funeral.
