Chapter 10: The Trial

Rhea's POV

The Stormbrook council hall was built to make people feel small.

The ceiling was black oak and the windows were narrow.

The floor was a ring of grey stone, and every accused wolf had to stand in it alone.

I stood in it with my chin up and my six children beside me.

They had washed their faces for the occasion.

Bram had refused to let go of the frog.

Alpha Stagg lay on a couch at the head of the hall with a fur over his knees.

He was thin and grey, with his eyes half open.

Theron stood on his right.

Corinna stood on his left, in a dove-grey dress, holding her husband's arm.

Perrin stood in front of them all.

He wore the iron ring on his hand and held a paper in his fist.

Lucan stood behind me, one pace back, as he had promised.

Three hundred wolves filled the benches.

"Rhea Harker," Perrin said, in a voice that carried to every corner. "You are accused of bearing six pups outside any bond, and of hiding them from this pack for nine years."

"Nine," I said. "And they have never been hidden. They were born in the open woods."

A ripple went through the hall.

"You are the daughter of a Stormbrook Beta," Perrin said. "You were declared barren by our own Healer. And yet you stand here with six children. Whose are they?"

"Mine."

"By what wolf?"

"That's my business."

"It is the council's business." Perrin turned, and his smooth face showed the hall how patient he was being. "A she-wolf who cannot bear has borne. Either the Healer was wrong, or this woman is lying about the pups."
