Chapter 21: Hot Coffee
We came out of the east door with seconds to spare.
The mountain finished falling behind us while twenty-five people stood in the snow and watched Station Nine go down into its own hole.
Hedda carried Rook out in her teeth, by the back of the cardigan.
She set him down at the feet of the state troopers who had come up the pass road.
She spat out a thread of grey wool.
"He's yours," she said, once she had her voice back.
The woman in the camel coat sat in the back of a cruiser, and so did the rest of the good coats.

Hedda's kitchen smelled like onions and woodsmoke at six in the morning.
Twenty-five people were asleep in the great room on couches and rugs and one another, wrapped in every blanket the house owned.
Quill slept in a chair by the door with her boots on.

For the first time in fourteen months, I was warm without making myself so.
Garth stood at the stove.
He had been standing there for three minutes.
