Chapter 17: Their Afternoon
The doctor's daughter put her coat on and went up to sit with the thing in her father's bed.
She couldn't think what else to do.
I went up to the first floor and knocked on 112.
Neil opened the door in his socks and flannel shirt.
The room was full of snow light from the window over the lake, white and bright on the walls.
His bed was made, and a chair was pulled up to the window, where he'd sat up every night since November.
"You didn't say anything at lunch," I said.
"You didn't need me to." He stepped back to let me in. "You were good, Meg."
I shut the door behind me.
"How were your parents?"
He sat down on the end of the bed and looked at his hands.
"My mother cried," he said. "Then she said Erin was so happy this year. She said at least she had one good year."
I sat beside him.
"I almost told her," he said. "I didn't. I'm going to let her keep the good year."
