Jasper's POV

By the third day, I was in Missouri, and I had stopped answering my phone.

Sabine had sent one message.

I read it once and blocked her number.

Heath had sent forty, and I answered all of them.

The wound under my belt hurt with every bump in the road.

I told myself it was only the stitches pulling.

At noon I pulled into a gas station on the old highway and opened my email.

The top message was from the magazine that had offered me a cover assignment three years ago.

I had never answered them.

They had finally answered me.

"Mr. Wynn, we regret to withdraw our standing interest. A video of your conduct toward a nurse has reached our editorial team. We cannot associate our name with it."

I put the phone face down on the dashboard.

At the next pump, a man in a ball cap looked up from his own screen, then at me.

"You're the guy who screamed at that nurse."

"I never raised my voice."

"Sure," he said, and moved his truck to a different pump.

My hands stayed steady.

I had already given away everything else.

By evening the sun was low, the sky was red, and my vision had a gray edge.

A neon sign buzzed ahead, with half its letters out.
