Chapter 22: The Crown
"Then prove it," I said.
"I will. A second laboratory. A panel of experts. Three months."
"Three months," I said. "While you keep running the country."
"Naturally."
"And my father?"
The regent smiled.
"He is very ill, my dear. We must all prepare."
I heard it for what it was.
He was telling the council, in front of me, that he would not need the three months.
My hands went cold.
Then the doors at the end of the chamber opened, and the old councillor half rose.
"Your Majesty," he said.
The king came in a wheeled chair.
His night nurse pushed it.
Beside it walked Tristan in a gray dressing gown, bandaged under the cloth, white to the lips and refusing to be helped.
"I told him to stay in bed," the physician muttered, coming in behind. "He said the bed could stay without him."
The regent rose so fast his chair went over.
"Brother. You should not be out of your room."
"I am the king," said the king, in a voice like dry leaves. "I go where I like."
The nurse wheeled him to the head of the table.
