Chapter 15: What She Heard
Nobody in the ballroom moved.
The quartet's cellist had set down his bow.
A waiter stood frozen with a tray of champagne.
I heard the air conditioner hum.
Then Joelle began to walk.
She came down the long center aisle on her cane, one step and then another, with every eye on her.
She didn't hurry.
She stopped three feet from Bridget.
"Say that again," Joelle said.
Bridget's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"The part you screamed. Say it again."
"I didn't..." Bridget's voice cracked. "I didn't mean to."
"That's it." Joelle's whole body began to shake.
"That's the voice. I've been hearing it for ten years in my sleep. I didn't see her. I didn't see her."
"Joelle, please."
"You came to my apartment Monday and sat on my couch and cried. I let you hold my hand." Joelle's face twisted.
"And you knew."
"I was scared!"
"You were scared." Joelle turned to look at the room. "I lay in a ditch on Quarry Road for eleven minutes. Eleven."
"Because someone was too scared to call an ambulance until her father got there first."
