Chapter 20: Labor Night
Sunday, July eighteenth, the sky over the Beverly ridge turned the color of a bruise at four in the afternoon.
By five the first tree came down across the road.
Gwen reported it from the kitchen window with a pair of Nunzio's binoculars.
"That's a whole oak," she said. "That is somebody's grandfather. Tabby, you can't get out of this house, and neither can anybody else."
"I'm not going anywhere," I said. "I can't see my feet."
I was thirty-nine weeks along.
I sat at the long wooden table with my ankles up on a chair.
A bowl of cold pasta sat in front of me, and I kept forgetting to eat it.
My back had hurt since noon, a dull ache low down.
I had told nobody.
Across the table, Fabrizia sat folding newborn sleepers into a laundry basket.
She was thirty-nine weeks along too, and she carried it all out front, round and high.
