Chapter 16: The Memos

We played them in the truck, in the care home lot, with all four doors shut and the windows up.

Lila sat in the back seat with her knees pulled to her chest.

There were eleven memos, each a minute or two long, the oldest dated June 28th.

I pressed the first one.

"Baby, it's me." Bennett's voice was low and kind, the voice he used on waiters and old women. "Valerie said some things about you last night. I won't repeat them. Don't cry. I've got you, and I'm going to fix it."

In the back seat Lila put her forehead on her knees.

"She never said any of it," I said.

"I know that now."

I pressed the fourth.

"July twelfth. At five to eight you take your shoes off and walk to the deep end. I'll be in the library window with the flashlight. Two flashes, and you go in. Wear the brace on the left wrist, I'm getting it Thursday. Say she pushed you. Say it twice, so they remember it."

Mitchell's hands tightened on the wheel.

"Next," he said.

The seventh was the shortest.

"Make Valerie's face the only face in the video. Stand where the phones can see her behind you, and go in facing her. Don't look at me. I'll come to you after."

I stopped it.

For a minute the only sound in the truck was Lila breathing.

Mitchell said, "He had a camera angle picked."

"He had everything picked," I said. "The wrist, the shoes, the ninety guests, the dress he asked me to wear."
