Chapter 10: The Board
The boardroom was on the ninth floor, and I had never been invited into it in my life.
It had a long oak table and eleven leather chairs, and a portrait of an old man in a high collar over the fireplace.
I had walked past that portrait only once, as a boy, holding my mother's hand.
Morven sat beside me in her cleanest scrubs.
Across the table, Veronica sat with a stack of folders in front of her and a lawyer on her left.
She was wearing her best suit and the confident face she kept for budget meetings.
"Thank you all for coming," she said to the eight board members who had filed in. "I'd like to open by saying how grateful I am for the Trust's confidence in me over six years."
Nobody answered.
"I called this meeting to address two instances of misconduct." She opened the first folder. "Dr. MacDonough signed an unauthorized admission, and Dr. Hallett operated while suspended. Both acted against the express order of the director."
"The director's order," one of the board members said, slowly, "was to put a dying woman out in the street."
"The director," Veronica said, "has the authority to manage this hospital's resources."
"Does she."
I did not recognize the voice.
It came from the far end of the table, from a chair no one had been sitting in.
The door behind it had opened without a sound.
A small woman in a gray wool coat came in and set a leather bag on the table.
She had short silver hair and wire glasses, and she took off her gloves one finger at a time.
"Mrs. Hallett," Veronica said. She had half risen. "I didn't know you were joining us."
