Chapter 10: The Pact

At five in the morning Cass was frying eggs.

She did it angrily, in a cast-iron pan she'd stolen from the tavern, and she did not speak.

Sabina sat at the card table with her coat still on.

I sat across from her, with the pierogi between us on a paper plate.

Nobody had gone anywhere.

Nobody had slept either, except for twenty minutes when I'd closed my eyes on the couch and woken up with a crick in my neck and Cass's afghan over me.

I had not put it there.

"Eat," Cass said, and slid a plate in front of each of us. "It's rule one."

"What's rule one?" Sabina asked.

"I haven't made the rules yet. But it's going to be eat."

She dropped into the third chair, put her elbows on the table and looked at both of us.

"All right," she said. "I'm only going to say this once. I'm twenty-six years old and I have been the only one holding this together for eleven years."

"That's not true," Sabina said.

"Let me finish. I'm mad at both of you. Dell for not writing, which she couldn't, and Sabina for the letters, which she did. I don't care. I am done being mad in separate rooms."

She flipped over a laminated menu from the Anchor Tavern and slapped it on the table.

"Pen," she said.

Sabina took one from her breast pocket.

It was a fine-point blue ballpoint, the same kind she'd used in the storage unit.

I looked at her handwriting on the back of the menu, small and square and perfect.

"Rule one," Cass said. "Nobody lies to the other two."

Sabina wrote it down.

"Not even to protect us," Cass said. "Especially not to protect us."
