Chapter 13: The County Annex
Sam had the truck keys in his hand before I finished reading.
"Where's the county annex?" I asked in the yard.
"Out past the old fairgrounds. Twenty minutes."
"It's the overflow wing of the county hospital," I said. "Adele's board runs it."
"Get in."
I got in.
He drove with both hands on the wheel and did not say one word for ten miles.
I called the administrator at Maple Court and it rang out.
I called again.
On the third try she picked up, crying.
"Mrs. Halvorsen, they came at twenty to twelve with two orderlies and a paper from the foundation.
"I told them to wait for you.
"They said the board had signed it and I would lose my job."
"Where is she now?"
"The annex. I'm in my car outside it. They won't let me in."
"Stay there," I said. "I'm coming."
The annex was a long brick building with half its windows dark.
A sign over the door said Overflow Care in letters that had been repainted.
Sam parked across two spaces and came around the truck before I had my belt off.
The front desk was a single night nurse behind a glass window.
She looked up at my bandaged hand and then at Sam's size, and her face closed.
"Visiting hours are over," she said.
"I'm here for my mother. She was brought in at midnight from Maple Court."
"Name?"
I gave it.
She typed it, and her mouth went tight.
"She's here on a foundation placement. I can't release a foundation placement without the foundation's signature."
"Then call the foundation."
"It's midnight on a Saturday."
"Then I'll see her."
"I can't let you back."
"I'm her daughter," I said. "I hold her power of attorney for medical decisions.
"I signed it the day she moved into Maple Court, and I have the copy in my purse."
