Chapter 17: The Night Before

Eloy had never been through my father's front door.

He stood on the step on Friday at dusk with a sack of roasted chile in one arm and a foil tray of his mother's tamales in the other.

"She says eat before you fly," he said. "She says it's not a favor."

"Come in," I said.

Corina's promo had been on every channel all day, and I had stopped looking at my phone.

He wiped his boots twice and ducked under the lintel.

My father's flight jacket hung on its hook by the door, the leather gone soft and pale at the elbows.

Eloy looked at it and did not touch it.

"Where does this go?" he asked, and held up his hat.

"On the hook."

"That's his."

"There's room on the hook," I said.

He hung his hat over the sleeve of my father's jacket, carefully, and stood back.

We ate at the kitchen table with the radio low.

He talked about the chile harvest, and I talked about the wind, and neither of us said the word Saturday.

He washed the plates before I could stop him.

When he set the last one in the rack, I took the dish towel out of his hands and dropped it on the counter.

"Del," he said.

"My bedroom is the door at the end of the hall," I said. "I bought the bed in July. Nobody has been in it but me."

He looked down the hall.

"Then I'd like to be first," Eloy said.
