Chapter 9: Pie Saturday
"She'll spend her first birthday wherever I am," I said.
Bradford smiled.
"That's what I'm counting on," he said, and went back inside.
Cormac shook his head beside me.
"That was the creepiest thing I've ever heard on a set of stairs," he said. "And I once found a guy living in a stairwell with forty ferrets."
"He knows."
"Knows what?"
"I don't know." I shoved the chocolate in my coat pocket. "He said first birthday. Of all the days in the year."
Cormac didn't answer that.
He just walked me to the truck and kept himself between me and the courthouse doors the whole way.
I had eleven dollars, a crocheted blanket and a baby.
The legal aid office was free. Diapers weren't.
So on the first Saturday in May, I baked.
The lieutenant gave me the firehouse kitchen from four in the morning until noon.
The crew chipped in for flour, butter and three flats of strawberries from the produce place on Rutherford Avenue, and wouldn't let me write down who'd given what.
By six there were twenty pies cooling on every flat surface in the building, including the hood of the engine.
"Not the engine," the lieutenant said.
"It's the warmest surface."
They built the stand out of two sawhorses and a door the big guy found in the basement.
The probie painted the sign. PIE SATURDAY. He spelled Saturday right on the second try.
At eight the lieutenant rolled up the bay doors.
There were already four people waiting.
By nine there were forty.
By ten the line ran past the hydrant and around the corner onto Bunker Hill Street, and the big guy was walking up and down it with Margo in a carrier on his chest, handing out samples on paper napkins and telling everyone she was the boss.
